WINNING ORIGINAL SONGS OF 2023!

Kianna – A Rainy Day in Spring

FIRST PRIZE WINNER!

“The original idea of the song was about “tennis” but after creating different melodies and combining different ideas, the song had different elements of rain and spring which led to the final storyline of the song.”

Miles – A New Year

RUNNER UP PRIZE WINNER

“An idea came to me. It was about the new year to come, and it was New Year’s eve when I found out about the competition, so I wrote a song about that. This is the first time I have ever written a song; it was a great experience. I want to write more songs. It was challenging to sing and play at the same time.”

Grace – The Pretty Butterfly

RUNNER UP PRIZE WINNER

“The song sounds happy and slow to portray a butterfly flying leisurely in the sky.”

Grace – The Pretty Butterfly

“The song sounds happy and slow to portray a butterfly flying leisurely in the sky.”

Liam – 3D

“3D is a happy and simple song. It uses the right hand only to emphasise this and moves between notes in steps.”

Isaac – Rain Going Down

“My song is relaxing, like when it’s raining.”

Penelope – Mystery

“My song creates a calm mood, but it is exciting in the fast part.”

Mia – Madness

“This is my first composition and my goal was to create an uplifting and fun song to show how excited I am about my new skills on the Saxophone.”

Riley – Mellow Reflections

“The melody described how she felt about all the issues in the world. From gender equality, climate change, or even just people getting along. The melody is a little bit sad, but has hopeful tones also.”

Neo – Summering

“A song that is a reminder of the memories of summer!”

Rohan – Melody Memories

“I wanted it to be a happy song so I picked G major and my chords are like a pop song”

Annabelle – How The Flowers Grow

“The song is about flowers growing, and it is calm and relaxed. The notes ascend and descend to create the feeling of growing up and wilting down as flowers do in their life cycle.”

Elizabeth – Swifting & Swaying

“The name “Swifting and Swaying” was inspired by the notes and rhythm in the song. The song slows down at the end and in the middle, making it feel like it’s “Swifting and Swaying.” The song portrays a joyful and upbeat mood.”

Georgia – Midnight

“Midnight is a peaceful and calm song that portrays the night sky. It is about the feeling of looking up at the night sky at midnight and seeing the twinkling stars.”

Matthew – Black & Blues

“As an adult learner, I never really thought I could compose music, but this competition inspired me to try. However, I did procrastinate, not getting started until January 30! Within that short time frame, I thought I’d aim for something simple, perhaps a good piece for beginning students to try. I had noted that many composers will write in one key but include non-diatonic notes, so I wanted to try that. I’ve read recently that Blues music is called ‘blue’ because these non-diatonic, or blue notes are used. So that’s where I got the title from. Lots of black notes on a page, with a couple of blue ones thrown in. I was also intrigued by modulations into other keys, so I thought I would try that too. (Just for one bar). I composed the piece using the MuseScore software, which I also had to learn. It was also fun to add articulations and dynamics.”
